Financially support the ministry of Reading Camp

We're planning on having 175 Reading Campers this summer and although over 100 people support the ministry with volunteer service over the summer, it does require a lot of money, too! Many materials donations are solicited and received from different individuals, churches, and businesses--which do lower costs, considerably--but much of the cost of running a wonderful Reading Camp do require dollars!

Please consider supporting the ministry of Reading Camp. If you support Reading Camp financially, your donation goes far!

$10 supports the purchase of the World According to Humphrey and Friendship According to Humphrey (both by Betty Birney) read aloud and take home books for one Reading Camper

$25 supports a take-home bag of books, journals, and a Christmas book gift for one Reading Camper

$50 supports a week of swimming lessons, crafts, field trips, and author visits for one Reading Camper

$75 supports a week of nutritious meals and snacks for a day Reading Camper

$100 supports instructional materials, books, a camp t-shirt and group photo for each camper

$300 supports one day Reading Camper for an entire week of Reading Camp at the Danville, Perry Co., Northern Kentucky, or Lexington Reading Camps

$500 supports one overnight Reading Camper for an entire week of Reading camp at the Cathedral Domain or Pine Mountain Settlement School Reading Camps

$7,200 covers the cost of one entire day Reading Camp for 24 campers, including all food, transportation, instructional materials, and equipment.

Reading Camp's Mission

Reading Camp’s goal is to help children who are reluctant and struggling readers improve literacy skills and become more confident students. The camp does not “look” or “feel” like school. The setting is the great outdoors, and the materials are new to the children. Each child is helped to read books of their choosing, encouraged to develop a love of learning, and given tools for reading proficiency. The children receive personal attention in a “failure-free” setting.

The daily schedule is filled with arts and crafts, games, hiking, swimming, and relaxation time. Skills that help children become better and more confident readers are woven throughout the day’s activities. The camp staff includes professional educators, recreation coordinators, and counselors.

The kids go through six learning centers in small groups, where they experience writing, pleasure reading, phonics, encoding and decoding, reading comprehension and reading strategies; this accommodates various learning styles. We bring in special speakers like noted Kentucky author George Ella Lyon and author and storyteller Harriette Arrington, to encourage the children and build their enthusiasm.

By the end of the week, they have gained confidence and enthusiasm about reading because of the enjoyment and success they experienced at camp.
